Rajasthan Royals Secure a Dominant Victory
The return of Sanju Samson as captain proved beneficial for the Rajasthan Royals, who defeated the Punjab Kings by a margin of 50 runs during their Indian Premier League match in Mullanpur.
The Royals set a formidable target of 205 runs, restricting Punjab to just 155 runs for 9 wickets. The Kings struggled throughout their innings, with only Nehal Wadhera (62 runs off 41 balls) and Glenn Maxwell (30 runs off 21 balls) managing to put up a fight against the Royals' bowling attack.
This match served as a harsh reminder for the Kings, who have now only managed to win two out of their last 15 home games.
Despite posting the highest total at this venue, the Royals faced challenges in defending their score due to the conditions and the depth of the Kings' batting lineup. However, English fast bowler Jofra Archer made an immediate impact, delivering a remarkable 144.6 kph delivery that dismissed Kings’ Impact Player Priyansh Arya on the very first ball of the chase. Arya, who had previously scored 47 runs off 23 balls against the Gujarat Titans, was unable to handle the pace, resulting in his wicket.
Kings' captain Shreyas Iyer came to the crease and managed to hit Archer for two boundaries, but Archer ultimately had the last laugh. Iyer attempted a big shot but missed Archer’s full delivery, which crashed into the stumps. The Kings found themselves in a precarious position at 11 for 2 when Marcus Stoinis (1) was caught by Sandeep Sharma off his own bowling. Local talent Prabhsimran Singh, who had scored 69 runs off 34 balls in their previous match against Lucknow Super Giants, was looking solid until he mis-hit a delivery from Impact Player Kumar Kartikeya, leading to a catch by Wanindu Hasaranga.
At 43 for 4, the Kings' innings saw a revival thanks to Wadhera and Maxwell, who formed an 88-run partnership off 52 balls. However, as the required run rate increased, Maxwell fell while attempting to clear the boundary, with Yashasvi Jaiswal taking a straightforward catch off Maheesh Theekshana's bowling. Just a ball later, Wadhera also departed after Dhruv Jurel executed a spectacular catch off Hasaranga's delivery. Following these dismissals, the Kings' innings lost momentum, leading to their first defeat of the season.
Earlier in the match, Jaiswal (67 runs off 45 balls) achieved his first half-century of this IPL, providing the Royals with an excellent start. He and Samson (38 runs off 26 balls) formed a solid partnership, accumulating 89 runs in just 10 overs. Lockie Ferguson eventually dismissed the skipper, whose poorly-timed shot was caught by Iyer at mid-off, prompting Samson to express his frustration.
While the Kings celebrated the wicket of their captain, Jaiswal continued to shine. The 23-year-old, who had struggled in the first three games with scores of 1, 29, and 4, made a strong comeback with a fluent half-century. However, he fell victim to Ferguson while attempting to chase a well-disguised slower ball that knocked over his stumps.
Nitish Rana (12) was dismissed cheaply, but Shimron Hetmyer (20 runs off 12 balls) and Riyan Parag (43 runs off 25 balls) provided the late fireworks, propelling the Royals past the 200-run mark. The Royals scored an impressive 55 runs in the final three overs to finish their innings on a high note.
Iyer commented, "I anticipated we would concede around 180-185 runs, which would have been a challenging total to chase. We gave away some extra runs and failed to execute our plans effectively. It's fortunate that this defeat occurred early in the season. The pitch was decent for batting, though it had some hold. We aimed to bowl with a bit of pace and not give them too much to work with. We could have built partnerships and taken a more measured approach instead of over-attacking. There are many lessons to take from this match."
Brief scores: Rajasthan Royals: 205/4 in 20 overs (Jaiswal 67, Parag 43*, Samson 38; Ferguson 2/37); Punjab Kings: 155/9 in 20 overs (Wadhera 62, Maxwell 40; Archer 3/25, Sharma 2/21, Theekshana 2/26)
